A two-up two-down in Levenshulme, a 1930s semi in Chorlton, a mill conversion in Ancoats: Manchester housing is varied, and the way a burglar would approach each one is just as varied. You tell us what your home looks like, we design the system, set it up in our workshop and post it to you ready to mount, then a technician talks you through the fitting on a video call if you want one.
The Manchester terrace: why the back yard comes first
Most of the city’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces were built with a narrow back alley – the ginnel or back entry – running behind the yards. The front door faces a busy street; the back of the house faces a quiet passage that few people watch. That is where we start when we plan a terrace.
Yard gate and back door
The kitchen door onto the yard is often the weakest door in the house. A contact on that door, and an outdoor detector covering the yard if the wall is low, gives you a warning before anyone reaches the kitchen.
Rear kitchen extension
Many terraces have a single-storey extension at the back, sometimes with a flat roof right under a bedroom window. That window gets its own contact, even upstairs.
Alley gates help, but not alone
Manchester City Council has gated many back alleys under Public Space Protection Orders, in areas such as Levenshulme, Rusholme, Gorton and Old Moat. Gates reduce casual access, but neighbours, delivery drivers and anyone with a key still use them, so the house itself still needs detection.
The cellar
Plenty of older terraces have a cellar with a grate or a small window at pavement level. It is easy to forget and easy to reach, so a contact or a motion detector there is worth considering.
Three other Manchester homes, three other plans
Semis in the south
Didsbury, Chorlton, Burnage, Sale: 1930s semi-detached houses with a side passage, a garden and often a detached garage or shed full of bikes and tools. The system covers the side gate, the patio doors and, if you wish, the garage with its own wireless detector.
City-centre flats
Ancoats, the Northern Quarter, Castlefield, Salford Quays: converted mills and new towers with fob entry. Focus shifts to the flat door, any balcony on a lower floor, and a leak detector for when you are away for the weekend.
Shared houses
Fallowfield, Withington and Victoria Park have many shared student and young-professional houses. Each housemate can have their own key fob or code, and the app shows who set and unset the alarm, which saves a lot of arguments.
What actually arrives at your door
You do not receive a box of loose parts to work out yourself. Every device is paired with the hub, named after your rooms (“Back door”, “Cellar”, “Front bedroom”) and tested in our workshop before the kit is packed. Each one is labelled so you know exactly where it goes.
- Adhesive mounts: no holes in plaster, brick or a rented wall
- The hub plugs into a socket next to your broadband router
- An illustrated guide written for your own layout
- A video call with a technician to check each step and run the final test
The equipment is Ajax wireless hardware with encrypted radio and NF&A2P certification, the French benchmark for intrusion alarm equipment. Our team has 17 years in the trade and has worked for brands such as Coca-Cola, Audi and Decathlon.

Who gets the alert?
Your VISAO kit is self-monitored. When a detector is triggered, the siren sounds and your phone receives an instant notification, whether you are at work in Spinningfields or on holiday. You decide what to do next: check with a neighbour, and call 999 if a break-in is in progress. In England, automatic police response is reserved for systems fitted by police-recognised installers and linked to an approved alarm receiving centre, so a self-monitored kit does not give you that. Our guide to police response to alarms in England explains the difference. If your home insurer asks about alarms, check what they require before ordering and tell us: we will say plainly whether our kit fits.
Questions from Manchester homeowners and tenants
Can I fit it in a rented terrace or a shared house?
Usually yes, because nothing is drilled or wired. Check your tenancy agreement and let your landlord or letting agent know, especially before placing anything outside such as a yard detector.
Will the outdoor detector go off every time a cat crosses the yard?
We choose outdoor and indoor detectors with pet immunity and set their position with you on the video call, so cats, foxes and the family dog are far less likely to trigger them.
What happens during a power cut or if the broadband drops?
The hub has a backup battery and, depending on the model in your proposal, can switch to a mobile SIM if your internet connection goes down.
Your Manchester home, protected from the back yard to the front door
Describe your home in two minutes. We send you a proposal for a system designed around it, then prepare, test and ship your kit once you order.
